Dungeons & Dragons – New Rules and Settings Revealed

Wizards of the Coast recently held a digital “Wizards Presents” event, during which they discussed their plans for Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Of particular interest to us is the fact that the 6th Edition of D&D, currently known as One D&D, should be going live in 2024, complete with improved backwards rules compatibility and an increased focus on digital play.

On top of that, we should soon expect new adventure books revitalizing D&D’s beloved Dragonlance and Planescape settings. And, if you’re a fan of R.A. Salvatore’s Drizzt character, you should get ready for some anniversary events coming your way in 2023.

The link above has plenty additional details, but here’s a video revealing D&D One to the world:

And some extra info about it:

One D&D: The Future of Dungeons & Dragons

Wizards Presents brought us the biggest news to come to Dungeons & Dragons in nearly a decade. One D&D is the code name for three initiatives shaping the next generation of the tabletop roleplaying game. As part of One D&D, we’re…

  • Updating and expanding on the existing rules of the game, culminating in the release of new rulebooks in 2024;
  • Improving D&D Beyond, which serves as the digital front door to D&D and is home to your collection of digital books; and
  • Building out the D&D Digital Play Experience, which is in early development but will serve as a virtual play space that’s integrated with D&D Beyond.

More on the One D&D Rules

The One D&D rules will be backwards compatible, allowing you to continue enjoying the adventures and supplements you play with today. Our goal for One D&D is to evolve the game in a way that reflects what players have told us they love and that makes it as versatile as them.

The One D&D rules are now in playtesting, with new drops of content dropping roughly every month. With each round of Unearthed Arcana materials, we’ll gather feedback from players like you to help refine the game.

To access playtest materials, you’ll need to unlock them for your D&D Beyond account. Sign in and then unlock playtesting by going to the claim page. Once you’ve unlocked playtesting, you can access the latest Unearthed Arcana materials by going into the One D&D compendium, found under the “Sources” menu.
